A God Who Weeps

I was touched by a comment made by a guest speaker at a church we visited just last week. The speaker was a missionary to an Islamic country. "They don't understand that God actually cries," she said. "Their god doesn't feel their pain or doesn't care. Our God does."

I thought of the story of the raising of Lazarus, in which Jesus wept when he saw the mourners at the home of his deceased friend. Even though he knew that he himself was about to raise this man from the grave, he still felt their pain and wept with them.

In my children's book The Good Samaritan, I chose to show the sorrow Jesus felt for the traveler who was beaten, robbed, and left for dead on the road to Jericho. Even though Jesus knew the man was going to be rescued and the story would have a happy ending, I doubt that he was flippant as he related this early part of the story. I imagine he shed a tear when speaking of the horrible things that happened to this man, and I chose to tell the story in such a way as to emphasize his deep feelings for the suffering of the traveler.

We do have a God who weeps.

I hope you will share this beautiful story with the children in your life and that you, as well as they, will be drawn closer to the loving arms of Jesus, who does care about us. Jesus feels our pain and bears our sorrows.
